The town of Gillett will host the annual Gillett Coon Supper on Jan. 8 at the school gymnasium. The well-known and anticipated event has been going strong for more than 50 years. To learn more about the event contact Larry Bauer at 870-548-2211.

Parkin Archeological State Park in Parkin will host a Primitive Pottery Workshop on Jan. 9. Learn how Native Americans from the region used local clays and primitive methods to make useful pots. Participants will make their own pottery using natural materials from the nearby St. Francis River. On Jan.16, join the park staff for a Go Native with Soap Making Workshop, where participants will make their own soap, and explore local flora that early Arkansans may have used in soap making. On Jan. 23, the park will host a Primitive Weapons Workshop, focusing on how Native American weaponry expanded and evolved over the years. During winter, Lake Chicot State Park in Lake Village becomes home to mallards, teals, canvasbacks, mergansers, and ring-necked ducks. Join park staff for the Waterfowl Watch Weekend on Jan. 9-10. The weekend is dedicated to all things waterfowl, including guided bird watching hikes, lake tours, land tours, and birding programs. On Jan. 16-17 the park will host a Raptor Watch Weekend. Ever wondered how to deal with a pesky mosquito problem? There is a natural solution…bats! Having bats close by can be one of the best ways to control mosquitoes and other insect pests. Learn more when the Lower White River Museum State Park in Des Arc hosts a Bat Boxes and Benefits Workshop on Jan. 16. Warfield Concerts in Helena-West Helena presents a performance by the American Spiritual Ensemble on Jan. 28.
