On Nov. 9, television cameras turned their sights on Pocahontas, Ark.Donny McElvoy, part of the HuntFishCook team, and a camera crew visited Buck Hollow Ranch in Warm Springs, Ark., just outside of Pocahontas.
HuntFishCook is a unique television program that combines hunting adventure with culinary talents. This show is designed to help outdoorsmen enhance their hunting and fishing experiences by providing recipes and techniques for transforming fish and game into sustenance for the table. The two-man team, consisting of outdoorsman Donny McElvoy and Chef Scott Leysath, travel cross-country in search of outstanding hunting, fishing and cooking opportunities. They have visited Arkansas in the past but have never been to the Pocahontas area.
Dena Woerner, Arkansas Department of Parks and Tourism communications manager, began corresponding with Chef Scott Leysath in early August 2009. “They were looking for a different place to bring the show and were interested in Arkansas’s abundant fishing and hunting opportunities,” stated Woerner. Around that same time, Woerner was also contacted by Linda Collins-Smith, president of the Randolph County Tourism Association, about Buck Hollow Ranch in Warm Springs. Woerner encouraged the Randolph County Tourism Association to send information on the ranch to the producers of HuntFishCook.
A well kept secret, the ranch consists of 2600 acres of land located on the eastern Ozark Plateau and includes sections of the Eleven Point and Forche river valleys. It is home to many animal species including deer, turkey and elk. Bass and bream are plentiful in Misty Lake and a wide range of nesting birds are often seen among the timber canopy. Owned by Tom Baker and managed by Keith Futrell, the property is operated as a wildlife refuge and management area. They have worked diligently to increase the health and population of the animals thriving at Buck Hollow. Recently, with increasing wildlife numbers, Baker decided to offer the ranch for eco-tours, photo safaris and commercial trophy hunting opportunities.
“We were thrilled to learn that Donny and Scott chose Buck Hollow Ranch for the upcoming feature story. To add to the excitement, HuntFishCook decided to add the Arkansas story to the December schedule,” stated Woerner.
When asked why they decided on Buck Hollow Ranch, McElvoy stated that the natural beauty of the area and the abundant game resources found at the ranch made for an excellent show. He also mentioned the great southern hospitality and accommodations of the ranch were top-notch. “Tom and Keith were great to work with. We really enjoyed our time in Warm Springs.” Members of the crew stayed overnight in the CamoLodge and Donny and his wife Kate were guests at the Baker home, located on the bank of Buck Hollow’s Misty Lake. After a day of hunting, Donny took an eight-point buck. Tom Baker shared his family venison recipe to be used by Leysath on the episode.
The television program will air after Dec.15 and can be seen on the Sportsman Channel, CSS, Comcast SportsNet, DirecTV Channel 605, Wild TV Hunting & Fishing, UNTAMED Sports TV, and Dish Network Channel 409.
