Explore the Wild Side of the Ozarks

The Ozark Gateway region is a playground for anyone who loves the rush of fresh air, the crunch of gravel underfoot and the endless possibility of a new trail ahead. With rolling hills, clear rivers and a mix of wide-open spaces and deep woods, it’s a place where fun comes naturally.

Hit the Trails

The trails of the Ozark Gateway region are a chance to unplug and let the world fade away. Start at Rock Creek Natural Area, where a gentle loop trail leads you across clear streams and into the calm pools of Bubbling Springs. It’s a place to take your time, listen to the water and let the hush of the forest settle in.

At Devil’s Knob and Devil’s Backbone Natural Area, you’ll find a loop that feels like a walk through the past. The path winds between towering junipers and rocky outcrops, giving you a glimpse of the wild beauty that has endured for centuries.

If you’re drawn to places that feel untouched, Hall’s Creek Canyon Natural Area near Ravenden carves deep into the bluffs. The narrow canyon shelters rare ferns and quiet pockets of forest where it’s easy to slow down and take it all in.

Hell’s Creek Natural Area is a little more rugged. The trail is narrow and surrounded by dense forest, with fewer signs of people and more chances to spot wildlife. It’s quiet, shaded and feels a bit off the map in the best way.

Get On the Water

Waterways here aren’t just for admiring, they’re for jumping in and floating down. The Spring River, White River and Eleven Point River are known for trout and bass fishing, but they’re also some of the best places to launch a canoe or kayak and let the current set your pace.

Mirror Lake is a calm spot for fishing with a touch of a wild side thanks to the waterfall that spills over the dam and cools the air around it. The Cache River’s backwaters are perfect for spotting birds and reeling in a big crappie or bluegill. And if you're looking for variety, Cherokee Village delivers with seven connected lakes that are ideal for casting a line, paddling at your own pace or jumping in for a swim.

Ride, Climb and Camp

If you’re more into wheels than paddles, the Syllamo Trail is 50 miles of dirt and rock that’s been recognized for its rugged beauty. Riders come here for the switchbacks, the dips and the challenge of pushing themselves a little farther each time. For climbers, Jamestown Crag is an unexpected gem with more than 100 routes to test your skills and a camping area to swap stories around the fire afterward. Camping is the best way to end an outdoor day here. There’s something about falling asleep to the sounds of the forest knowing tomorrow is another day to go a little farther and see a little more.

Small Towns with Big Personality

Mountain View lives for live music. Most nights, the courthouse square fills with bluegrass pickers and curious visitors tapping along. Hardy hugs the Spring River with antique shops, cafés and outfitters that can set you up for a lazy float. Batesville looks over the White River and pairs a walkable main street with can’t-miss local restaurants.
