Skygazing
Dark Skies Above, Unique Experiences BElow
Under Arkansas skies, the stars feel closer. With wide-open landscapes and minimal light pollution, the night sky puts on a show you don’t have to imagine. Stretch out under a blanket of stars, trace constellations or catch a meteor streak across the sky. Whether you’re a seasoned stargazer or just looking for a quiet moment outdoors, it’s an experience that feels both peaceful and unforgettable.
Finding dark skies is easy. In larger cities, head outside town for a clearer view. In smaller communities, it can be as simple as stepping outside. Less light means more to see, from bright constellations to distant planets.
In 2019, the Buffalo National River became Arkansas’s first International Dark Sky Park, designated by the International Dark-Sky Association—the leading authority on night sky protection. The designation recognizes the park’s commitment to preserving its natural nighttime environment for visitors to experience and enjoy.
Beyond the Buffalo, many of Arkansas’ 52 state parks offer excellent stargazing, along with interpretive programs that bring the night sky to life. From scenic overlooks to remote parks, there are plenty of places to take it all in—and by supporting dark sky efforts, we can help protect these views for years to come.
