Outdoor Adventure at the Fish Hatchery

08/13/2014

There’s something happening on Saturday, Sept. 6 at the Norfork National Fish Hatchery in Mountain Home. It’s an outdoor adventure day for kids between the ages of 5 and 15.

Activities range from fly fishing in Dry Run Creek and shooting bows and arrows to BB gun target practice and Japanese fish painting.  You can also roast marshmallows and learn about fish entomology and tying fish flies.

Admission is free and the event is open to children and their parents and grandparents or other fun-loving adults. Last year, more than 400 kids participated in the event where the main focus is to get kids more involved with the great outdoors.

The facility is one of the U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service’s largest producing fish hatcheries. Next to the Norfork River and Norfork Dam, the Norfork Hatchery is home to 2.5 million Brown, Rainbow and Cutthroat Trout that are stocked annually into Arkansas waterways. The Norfork National Fish Hatchery has been stocking trout in Arkansas’s world famous White and Norfork Rivers since 1955.

Dry Run Creek is a prestigious fishing stream for the mobility impaired and kids under the age of 16, only. It’s open to this select group of anglers year-round and provides not only the change to learn more about trout, but also the opportunity to fish for the monsters that lurk in the depths.

The hatchery is located at 1414 Ark. 177 S. For more information, contact Pat Smith at 870-425-1755 or by email at [email protected].
