H.U. Lee International Gate and Garden
What to know
This striking gate and peaceful garden in the downtown River Market District honor the founder of the American Taekwondo Association (ATA), Eternal Grand Master Haeng Ung Lee. The memorial also salutes martial arts and serves as a symbol of friendship between South Korea and the U.S.
Steps away from the hustle of Markham Street and the Statehouse Convention Center, the gate was handcrafted by South Korean artists in the Hongsalmun style and decorated in traditional Korean colors and symbols. Inside the garden is a nine-foot tall fountain and reflective pool, the Wall of Vision, a bust of Eternal Grand Master Lee, and numerous educational artifacts explaining martial arts. Many other statues are placed around the garden, including Harubang statues made from lava rocks and two Haitai or ‘fire eater’ statues from Korean mythology.
