Tichnor
Tichnor is an unincorporated community in the heart of Arkansas’s natural and cultural history. Located in Arkansas County, it is near Arkansas Post, Arkansas’s first European settlement. It is on the edge of the White River, and less than ten miles from the Arkansas and Mississippi Rivers. It is close to the White River National Wildlife Refuge and several Arkansas Wildlife Management areas. Millions of ducks and geese travel this region on their winter migration south, making it an ideal location for hunting and birdwatching. Lakes and rivers in this area offer camping, fishing, and other outdoor activities.
The community was named for Calvin Tichnor (sometimes spelled Tichenor), who arrived in the area from Indiana in the 1870s. He was appointed postmaster in 1887, and the mail stop (most likely in his home) was then called Tichnor.Â
