Waldenburg
Think of Waldenburg and most likely the intersection of State Highway 14 and U. S. Highway 49 comes to mind. When you arrive at this intersection, you have reached some of the best burgers around. The Dairy Shack, open for more than 20 years, is known to attract people from all over northeast Arkansas, and those just passing through, for its handmade hamburgers and cheeseburgers, patted out twice daily.
Located in Poinsett County, about 25 miles southwest of Jonesboro, the town incorporated in 1958 after going through several name changes, including the German Settlement, Bern, and Youngville. The town began as a small milling community along the Cotton Belt railroad tracks, settled by German immigrants whose descendants still make up the majority of the population. The economy today is primarily agriculture and related businesses.
Thanks to its location near the Cache River and Earl Buss Bayou DeView Wildlife Management Area, Waldenburg is a popular destination for waterfowl hunters during the fall and winter. Various hunting clubs and lodges draw visitors from around the nation and the world to experience Waldenburg’s excellent duck hunting.
