What to know

Rising 1,350 feet out of the Arkansas River Valley, Mount Nebo towers over Lake Dardanelle and welcomes visiting riders with sweeping vistas that stretch for hundreds of miles. Aside from cabins and a campground, the state park is home to a 25-mile trail system that includes two downhill-only runs, as well as plenty of multi-directional trails of varying difficulty.

The Chickalah Downhill and Hayes Creek Run are two miles each and pumped full of pure downhill joy. On Chickalah, you’re in for tight switchbacks with swooping berms and trail that hugs the side of the mountain as it snakes its way downward, making for an exhilarating roller coaster of a ride.

The downhill is part of the Chickalah Valley Loop, which features technical rock gardens and panoramas of the valley below, so don’t forget to stop to take in the views as you make your way back to the top. Hayes Creek Run takes it up a notch with nearly 900 feet of descent, and while it’s fun to get off the brakes, we recommend pausing at the winding bridge to take in a hidden waterfall. A parking lot at the very bottom means you can either shuttle to the top by car or climb back up on your bike via Ox Pull Trail.
