The Rand Theatre on South Marr Street had regular live entertainment during the 1950s and early ‘60s. It became a frequent venue for a young singer-songwriter, Bill Rice, who grew up in Datto, not far from Pocahontas. Bill went on to become the most award-winning songwriter in the history of ASCAP, the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers. He was awarded ASCAP writer of the year six times, has been nominated for four Grammys and has received many other awards for his talent. Bill’s songs have been recorded by Elvis Presley, Jerry Lee Lewis , Sonny and Cher, Charley Pride among others. He and his long-time partner, Jerry Foster, had 11 songs on the charts at one time. They were inducted into the Nashville Songwriters Hall of Fame in 1994.
