THE FAMILY GUIDE TO FALL BREAK IN ARKANSAS
The switch to fall has a way of bringing families together. The days cool off, the leaves start to change and everyone’s looking forward to that much-needed “fall break.” There’s no better time to load up the family in the car and take a trip to The Natural State.
Around here, you don’t need to have a big, overly complicated plan - just pick a direction and you’re guaranteed to discover places where kids can explore, parents can breathe and everyone ends up with a story to tell.
Plus, Arkansas is home to some of the most vivid and breathtaking fall colors in the country, so be sure to save plenty of room in your camera roll for those family photos.
RIVER VALLEY
Overlook at Petit Jean State Park
The River Valley region was practically built for families, especially Petit Jean State Park. There’s an easy hike to Cedar Falls that has a spectacular payoff in its scenic overlooks, giving you those “everybody stop and look” moments. After the kids (and you) burn off some energy, go explore historic Fort Smith.
The city throws a pretty impressive Fall Festival - complete with free admission to museums, food trucks, live music and plenty of opportunities for family fun. The festival happens every October, so make sure to check the local calendar to make sure it aligns with your visit. If you’re still looking for that fall foliage fix, then make your way up Mount Magazine, where the views are big enough to quiet even your most chatty kid. Make it a whole stay and book a room at The Lodge at Mount Magazine - roomy, relaxed and the kind of place where you can watch the sunset together from the balcony.
OZARKS
Fall in the Ozarks is what family road trips are all about - new experiences that you’ll never forget. Ever been on a train? Take a ride on the Arkansas & Missouri Railroad and watch the Boston Mountains in all her glorious fall colors roll by (plus, get a break from driving). The train passes right by the Beard & Lady Inn, a quaint hotel that lets you step back in time and unplug for a while – there are no screens in the rooms, so you’re in the perfect place to take a break from technology.
Ever seen wild elk in action? Hike out to Boxley Valley at dawn or dusk for a chance to spot elk moving through the fields. But if you’re wanting to keep some fall classics on the itinerary, spend a day at Rivercrest Orchard’s Fall Festival in Fayetteville, AR for all the seasonal hits: pumpkin picking, fall treats, photo ops amidst a field of sunflowers and zinnias, live music and more. No fall trip to the Ozarks is complete without a stay near the Buffalo National River where storybook scenery and outdoor adventure are yours to explore.
OUACHITAS
Digging for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park
If you’re headed toward the Ouachitas region, your fall break can easily turn into a choose‑your‑own‑adventure style vacation. Hot Springs National Park is a must-visit destination with countless opportunities for discovery - both for the outdoors lovers or the more indoor, history lovers.
If you’re in town from October 23-25, the Güdrun Northwoods Mountain Bike Festival should absolutely be on your itinerary. Whether your crew are mountain bike enthusiasts or people-watching enthusiasts, this 3-day all-ages festival brings in a big crowd and even bigger opportunities to soak up some local culture. If you’re looking to make a memory your kids will talk about for years, spend a day digging for diamonds at Crater of Diamonds State Park. What you find, you keep - so maybe there’s a diamond with your name on it. For places to stay, you’ve got lots to choose from, but Queen Wilhelmina Lodge offers a super cozy place to crash, with gorgeous mountain views to treasure after a big day.
DELTA
The Delta is full of rich history and unique outdoor experiences, but the region also knows how to celebrate the fall season for families. From September 26 to November 8, the Jackson’s Farm Arkansas Pumpkin Festival in Black Rock, AR is the place to be. This season-long celebration features pumpkin patches, corn mazes, hayrides, a petting zoo and more fall-focused activities. Have the kids put down their screens during a scenic drive along Crowley’s Ridge Parkway and then make a stop at Lake Chicot State Park for fishing, hiking and a lakeside stay in a cozy cabin.
CAPITAL
Family with park ranger at Pinnacle Mountain State Park
Mix up city vibes with fall traditions in Little Rock. For a family-friendly downtown stay, book a room at the Capital Hotel which puts you a stone’s throw within kid-friendly museums like the Museum of Discovery or the Arkansas Museum of Fine Arts. But you’re also not far from outdoor getaways like Pinnacle Mountain State Park where you and your squad can get a morning hike in before you’re off to the next stop. If you’re in town the weekend of October 3 and 4, you could check out the North Little Rock Air Show where you can see aircraft of the past and present up close and in action!
TIMBERLANDS
The Timberlands region offers even more unique opportunities for fall family fun, like taking a walk among the changing trees at the South Arkansas Arboretum. But if you’re looking for something a little more spooky, make a stop at The Dancing Ranch Farm in Fouke, AR - home to haunted hayrides and other Halloween-themed activities that are fun for all ages. Cap it all off with a stay at The Haywood in El Dorado which puts you in the middle of the city’s arts and entertainment district, making it conveniently close to even more fall eats and treats.
The Natural State truly comes alive with family-friendly activities in the fall, so be sure to check the events calendar to see what’s happening during your fall break. Once you pick your week, book your stay and get ready to hit the road for a fall break you’ll be talking about as a family for years to come.
