The Diamond Lakes of Arkansas

07/18/2013

Lakes are a popular outdoor draw in Arkansas.

Some popular options located in southwest Arkansas include the five Diamond Lakes which are Lake Ouachita, Lake Hamilton, Lake Catherine, Lake Greeson and DeGray Lake. Here are some quick details about each:

Lake Ouachita

The largest lake in the state, Lake Ouachita is surrounded by the Ouachita National Forest. There are many miles of shoreline and in general the lake is a haven for those that enjoy the outdoors. Water sports like water skiing and kayaking are popular as are boating and fishing and more. There are islands for camping and on the eastern shore of the lake is Lake Ouachita State Park.

Lake Catherine

Situated on the lakeshore of this lake is Lake Catherine State Park. The lake is nestled in narrow valleys of the Ouachita Mountains. The sole full service marina on the lake can be found at this state park and is open during the summer. There is also a public launching ramp at the park where one can launch their boat from. Boats and more can also be rented at the park in the off-season at the visitor center.

Lake Hamilton

Lake Hamilton is a popular recreational and residential lake in the state. Boating and fishing are popular and some restaurants also have lake access where one can arrive by boat. Garvan Woodland Gardens is a lakeshore botanical garden that can be found here as well as the Electric Island Nature Trail. Arkansas Scenic 7 Byway also crosses the lake.

Lake Greeson

This lake features clear waters and rocky ridges that form islands and long peninsulas extending into the lake. Anglers head here for the fishing and around the lakeshore is Daisy State Park.
